Lead cups were once commonly used as drinking vessels. Often times used to drink whiskey or ale, this combination rendered many unconscious.

This could sometimes result in a persons death, however, most often they were laid out on the kitchen table for a couple of days and the family would gather around, eat and drink and wait to see if they would wake up. Hence the custom of holding a "wake."
